During the natural aging process, various elements of the spine will experience degeneration due to wear and tear. One of these may result in a cervical herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) meaning that one of the intervertebral discs within the cervical (neck) region of the spine has leaked its gel-like substance through a fissure in the fibrous outer disc wall. This can also occur following a neck injury. The neck is under a great deal of stress because it supports the weight of the skull and offers a great range of motion and movement.
